General Background.Coach Paul grew up in Connecticut playing youth basketball from 4th through 8th grade. He played 4 years of Varsity golf and hockey through high school. Michael graduated from St. Leo College, Florida where he played 4 years on the golf team however, he boasts meeting his wife Lisa, was his college highlight.
Michael and Lisa operate family owned commercial flooring and interior finishes business in Alexandria. They have 4 children. Their oldest daughter has recently joined the family business; his oldest son is a freshman at MarymountUniversity where he plays Lacrosse and is currently in his 5th year as a NVJCYO referee.His younger son Riley and daughter Lindsey attend St. Thomas More in Arlington.
Coaching Experience. 2011 will be Coach Paul's fifthyear as a Matrix coach, all with the same group of players that will be 9th graders for the 2011 season. In the past he coached the 10U green in 2007 the 11U “Green Wave” in 2008, the 12U Black team in 2009 and the 13U Black team in 2010. The 13U Black team won the silver medal at the 2011 Potomac Valley District Championships and the team competed at D-II Nationals. In 2010, the 12U Black Team won the Silver Medal at the Potomac Valley AAU District’s and participated in the AAU Nationals in Ft. Myer, Florida.
Michael started coaching CYO basketball in 1987 in the NVJCYO. He continues to coach in the CYO and has coached at St. Thomas More since 1998. He’s coached girl’s teams for 13 seasons and boys teams for 10 seasons. His teams have compiled 3 division championships, 2 league tournament championships, and 5 times runner-ups.
In 2010, Coach Paul coached at St. Thomas More with the junior boy’s Division 2 team and the Varsity Girls Division 1 team. The Division 1 girls’ team was Division 1 Champs in 2009. Coach Paul has coached four years in the Arlington Travel program. During the 2009-2010 season, Coach Paul coached the Arlington Avalanche Travel 14U/8th Grade team, which won the regular season championship and finished second in the post-season tournament.
In addition to coaching, Michael is the head of the CYO sports program at The Cathedral of St. Thomas More; he currently is the NVJCYO Varsity girl’s league commissioner and has been a league commissioner the past 16 years.
Coaching Philosophy. Coach Paul works tirelessly on fundamentals, defense, team play, chemistry, hustle, and sportsmanship. His teams play pressure defenses and use it to create their offensive opportunities. He believes in allowing his players the opportunity to achieve an advanced level of play, a higher playing level than they may think they are capable of achieving. He emphasizes teamwork and being a good teammate at every practice and game. He’s been fortunate with having players of all abilities, who are open minded, willing to put in a lot of hard work to get better.
For the fifth straight year, Coach Paul will be assisted by Coach Rich Boll.
