2010-2011 Matrix 10U Black Head Coach
General Background. Tony Meredith is a native of Ettrick, Va. (just outside of Petersburg) and attended Matoaca High School where he was a three year starter on two AA state semifinal teams. As a senior, Tony was named first team all district, second team all region, and honorable mention all state in basketball.
Tony attended Ferrum College for two years where he helped the Panthers win a 1994-1995 conference championship (the Dixie Conference, now known as the USA South) as a freshman. Tony was Ferrum’s third leading scorer as a sophomore. Tony later transferred to Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia where he finished his undergraduate work and he played for Chuck Driesell.
After his eligibility was complete, he served as a student assist under Coach Driesell. Tony is also a counselor at Chuck Driesell’s Basketball Academy during the summer.
Coach Tony is a Center Supervisor in the Fairfax County’s Office for Children SACC program and has been in the program for ten years.
Tony’s hobbies are watching sports and spending time with his nieces and nephews.
Coaching Experience. Coach Tony has coached on and off since high school. Between transferring from Ferrum to Marymount, he was the ninth grade coach and varsity assist at Matoaca High School for a year. He has been a coach with the McLean Select Basketball Program for 6 years, during which time he as coached at all four age group levels. For the 2010-2011 season, Tony is coaching the McLean Select 10-Under Division 1 team. Last year, he coached the McLean 10-Under Division 2 team.
This is Coach Tony's second year with the Matrix. For the 2010 Spring season, he coached the Matrix 9U/4th grade Black team. For the 2010-2011 AAU season(s), Coach Tony is moving up with the team and will be coaching the Matrix 10U Black team.
Coaching Philosophy. Coach Tony’s focus is on skill building and fundamentals to develop his player’s full basketball potential. His defensive philosophy is “Offense wins games but defense and rebounding wins championship”. Coach Tony’s offensive philosophy is to take care of the ball, sharing the ball, and shoot when open.
In addition, Coach Tony’s objective is to prepare all the players that he will coach for the next stage in their basketball career, whether it be their next AAU team, high school team or college team.
Coach Tony also believes in teaching life skills through basketball. For example, teaching the importance of hard work, commitment, accountability, and goal setting. As part of this goal setting process, Coach Tony prepares individual skills development plans for each of his players.
Coach Tony is looking for a group of players that are to be committed to developing their basketball skills.
